Maria Sharpova returns to world no. 1
August 18, 2013Maria Sharapova has returned to the summit of the women’s tennis rankings following her French Open win on Saturday.
The ranking completes a remarkable comeback for the Russian, who last sat atop the pile in 2008 before a shoulder injury saw her plummet to 126th in the world.
However, victory at Roland Garros, which completed a career Grand Slam for Sharapova – making her only the sixth woman in the Open Era to achieve that feat, and the 10th overall – was enough for the 25-year-old to reclaim top spot.
“It’s such an amazing feeling to be back in the position of being number one in the world,” said Sharapova.
“I had the joy of holding the number one trophy many years ago.
“Since then, I’ve gone through the injury and come back, and to be holding it a few years later is a huge achievement for me. It’s a special day and I hope I can keep the ranking for a long time.”
Sharapova replaces Victoria Azarenka at the top of the rankings.
